Nanyuki is a highland town in Laikipia County, Kenya, located just north of the equator at the foothills of Mount Kenya. Approximately 200 kilometres from Nairobi, it is one of Kenya’s best destinations for weekend getaways, family holidays, wildlife safaris and Mount Kenya adventures. The road journey from Nairobi normally takes about 3½ to 4½ hours.
Nanyuki town is the main gateway to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of Kenya’s leading wildlife and rhino conservation areas. Ol Pejeta is approximately 30 to 45 minutes from Nanyuki.
Nanyuki also provides access to the wider Laikipia conservancy region, known for its private wildlife areas, low-density tourism and exclusive safari camps. These include Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Borana Conservancy, Ol Lentille Conservancy and several community-owned conservancies across northern Laikipia.
The Laikipia conservancies protect important populations of rhinos, elephants, lions, African wild dogs, Grevy’s zebras and other endangered wildlife. Many offer activities that are not widely available in national parks, including guided bush walks, night game drives, horse-riding safaris, camel walks and community visits.
Nanyuki is also a convenient stop on longer Kenya safari circuits. Travellers heading north to Samburu National Reserve, Lewa and Borana or east towards Meru National Park can spend one or two nights in Nanyuki and combine their journey with Ol Pejeta.
Mount Kenya National Park is accessible from the Nanyuki area through the Sirimon route, while Naro Moru provides another important approach to the mountain. Big 5 Safaris, Kenya
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of the main reasons people visit Nanyuki. Located approximately 30 to 45 minutes west of the town, it covers about 360 square kilometres, or 90,000 acres, in Laikipia County.
The conservancy is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Other wildlife includes cheetahs, Grevy’s zebras, African wild dogs, giraffes, hippos, spotted hyenas and Jackson’s hartebeest.
Ol Pejeta is particularly important for rhino conservation. It is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and home to Najin and Fatu, the world’s last two northern white rhinos. Visitors can reserve a dedicated experience to meet them and learn about the work being undertaken to save the subspecies.
The conservancy also contains Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where visitors can see chimpanzees. The sanctuary provides long-term care for chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and unsuitable living conditions.
