Tafaria Castle & Country Lodge is located in the Ndaragwa area, between Nyeri and Nyahururu. Its castle overlooks the Laikipia plains, Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges. You can sleep inside the castle itself or choose a room or cottage in the surrounding country lodge.

Choose Tafaria if you want your accommodation to feel like the main event of the trip. A night here can be built around a castle tour, a leisurely meal, an activity and time enjoying the grounds. It is a particularly good choice for a couple celebrating an occasion or a family seeking something different from a conventional resort.

We would usually suggest two nights if you are travelling from Nairobi. One night gives you time to see the castle, but two allow you to enjoy the activities without spending much of your break on the road.

For the strongest castle experience, request the Lord’s Room, the Chamber or a Lord’s Court room. If privacy, a fireplace or space for children matters more, one of the surrounding quarters may suit you better.

Where is Tafaria Castle located?

Tafaria Castle is in the Ndaragwa area of Nyandarua County, along the Nyeri–Nyahururu Road. It is often described online as being in Nyeri or Nyahururu because it lies between the two towns. The property’s location in the Ndaragwa countryside is more precise than either town name.

Directions from Nairobi:

• Via Nyeri: Nairobi > Thika Superhighway > Nyeri > Mweiga > Nyahururu > Tafaria (Current Best Route)
• Via Gilgil: Nairobi > Naivasha > Gilgil > Ol Kalou > Nyahururu > Tafaria

Signage is clear near the entrance, and the last stretch is well-maintained gravel. It’s advisable to use a 4x4 during the rainy season.

Is Tafaria Castle good for families?

Yes. Tafaria’s family appeal comes from its interconnecting accommodation, open grounds and mix of activities. Children may enjoy seeing the castle and taking part in suitable tours or leisure activities, while parents have room options that keep the family close together.

Tafaria Castle entrance fee and day visits

You can enquire about visiting Tafaria without staying overnight. A day visit may be enough if you want to see the castle, take a tour, eat at the property or book an activity.

The entrance fee and what it covers can change, so confirm the current adult and child charges before travelling. How many nights should you stay?

One night works if Tafaria is a stop on a longer journey. You can arrive, explore the property, have dinner and leave after breakfast.

Two nights are better for a dedicated getaway from Nairobi. They give you a full day for a tour, an activity and time to enjoy the castle without rushing.

Day 1: Travel to Tafaria, check in, explore the castle grounds and have dinner.

Day 2: Take a castle or art experience, enjoy lunch, then choose an activity such as horse riding, archery or swimming.

Day 3: Have breakfast and return to Nairobi, or continue your journey through the central highlands.
