Rhino Watch Safari Lodge Photos

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is a countryside safari lodge in Mweiga, Nyeri County, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range. It is outside Aberdare National Park and Solio Game Reserve, making it a practical base for separate day trips to either destination. Guests can also spend a quieter day at the lodge, with its pool, spa, gardens and birdwatching opportunities.

For our clients, its position is particularly useful on a longer Kenya safari. We can include a Solio rhino drive or an Aberdare excursion, then continue towards Lake Nakuru, Naivasha and the Masai Mara. Travellers heading in the other direction can use it before continuing to the central or northern Kenya safari circuit.

Rhino Watch offers several styles of accommodation, from safari tents and chalets to family units and premium accommodation. This variety makes the room category an important part of the booking decision: a couple seeking a tented stay, a family needing separate bedrooms and a group planning a short safari stop may each need a different unit.

Location: Mweiga, Nyeri County, outside the parks
Accommodation: Safari tents, chalets, family units and premium options
Meal plan: Full board on the published resident rates
Best for: Solio rhino excursions, Aberdare day trips, families and safari stopovers
Recommended stay: One night as a route stop; two or three nights for excursions

Our View of Rhino Watch Safari Lodge

Rhino Watch works best for guests who want comfortable accommodation outside the park and a choice of places to visit. A stay at The Ark or Treetops is centred on watching a particular waterhole inside Aberdare National Park. Rhino Watch offers a different rhythm: you choose a destination for the day, go out on a game drive, then return to the lodge for dinner, a swim or a quieter evening.

Solio is the standout excursion for clients whose main interest is rhinos. Aberdare offers a different day, with forest and highland scenery. Ol Pejeta is another option, although we would consider the total drive and the experiences you want before recommending it as a day trip instead of an overnight stay there.

The lodge also has enough to offer guests who do not want a game drive every day. The pool, spa, restaurant and birdwatching make it suitable for couples and families who want some time at the property itself. We would book two nights if you want to enjoy both the lodge and a substantial Solio or Aberdare excursion.

Its main booking consideration is the total safari cost. A full-board room rate covers meals, but a day trip may need a vehicle, guide and reserve or park fees. We will show those separately so you can decide whether Rhino Watch is the right base for your itinerary.

Rhino Watch Is Best For

  • Guests who want to stay outside Aberdare National Park
  • Travellers planning a Solio rhino safari
  • Couples who want a tent or chalet with lodge facilities
  • Families seeking a larger unit and a pool
  • Guests combining wildlife excursions with relaxation
  • Birdwatchers
  • Photographers interested in both lodge grounds and reserve drives
  • Travellers moving from the central highlands towards Lake Nakuru, Naivasha or the Masai Mara
  • Guests who prefer returning to the same lodge after different day trips

Consider Another Lodge If

  • You want to sleep inside Aberdare National Park
  • Watching wildlife at a floodlit waterhole is your main reason for visiting
  • You expect rhinos to roam through the lodge grounds
  • You want park fees and game drives automatically included in the quoted room price
  • You have only one night but want to fit in several full-day excursions
  • You want to wake up inside Solio Game Reserve itself

Swimming Pool and Wellness

The lodge has an infinity pool measuring 15 by 8 metres with views towards Mount Kenya in clear weather. A separate baby pool makes the pool area more useful for families.

The Weaver Bird Spa lists massage treatments, a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Guests planning a spa treatment should request the current treatment menu, opening times and prices before arrival. Spa treatments should not be assumed to be part of the full-board room rate.

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge Location and Map

Rhino Watch is in Mweiga, Nyeri County, outside Aberdare National Park and Solio Game Reserve. This distinction is useful when comparing safari accommodation: you can stay at the lodge without being inside a protected area overnight, then arrange entry for the excursions you actually take.

Approximate Journey Times

Journey Planning estimate
Nairobi to Rhino Watch by road The lodge estimates around 2½ hours; allow longer for Nairobi traffic and stops
Nanyuki Airstrip to Rhino Watch The lodge estimates around 45 minutes by road
Rhino Watch to Solio area The lodge indicates around 30 minutes
Rhino Watch to Aberdare park area The lodge indicates around 45 minutes
Rhino Watch to Ol Pejeta area The lodge indicates around 45 minutes

These are approach estimates, not the time required for a complete excursion. The gate used, road conditions and your chosen activity affect the day’s timing.

Getting to Rhino Watch Safari Lodge

By Road from Nairobi

The lodge is reached by road through the central Kenya highlands towards Nyeri and Mweiga. A private transfer is convenient if your holiday will continue to other safari destinations.

We can arrange:

  • Nairobi hotel or airport pickup
  • Private 4×4 Land Cruiser
  • Professional driver-guide
  • Rhino Watch accommodation
  • Solio or Aberdare excursion
  • An onward journey to Lake Nakuru, Naivasha or the Masai Mara

By Air

The property describes Nanyuki Airstrip as an air access option, followed by a road transfer to the lodge. Flight schedules, baggage limits and transfer availability need checking for your travel date. A road safari may be more practical if Rhino Watch is one stop in a multi-destination circuit.

Rhino Watch on a Kenya Safari Route

Solio and Aberdare from One Base

With two or three nights at Rhino Watch, you can use separate days for Solio and Aberdare without changing hotels. The two excursions offer different landscapes and wildlife priorities.

Samburu to Rhino Watch to Lake Nakuru

Rhino Watch can break a journey south from Samburu before you continue towards Lake Nakuru. We would check the driving time and decide whether the stop is primarily for rest or whether the itinerary allows enough time for a Solio drive.

Rhino Watch to Naivasha and the Masai Mara

After a Nyeri-area stay, the trip can continue through the Rift Valley towards Naivasha and onward to the Masai Mara. If the Mara is your main safari priority, we will avoid packing too many excursions into the transfer days.

Recommended Length of Stay

  • One night: A comfortable stop within a longer route.
  • Two nights: Time for a Solio or Aberdare excursion and time at the lodge.
  • Three nights: A more relaxed base for two different excursions.

These are our itinerary recommendations, not minimum-stay rules.

Items to Budget for Separately

Unless we expressly include them in your package, allow for:

  • Solio Game Reserve entry fees
  • Aberdare National Park entry fees
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy entry fees
  • Vehicle entry charges, where applicable
  • Safari vehicle and driver-guide
  • Guided game drives or day trips
  • Nature walks and specialist activities

The property lists an optional guided nature walk at KES 2,500 per person and an exclusive safari vehicle at KES 35,000 per day for 1–4 guests, or KES 40,000 for 5–7 guests on its resident rate page. Check vehicle availability, the final itinerary and destination entry fees before treating these as a complete excursion price.

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge Child Policy

Our existing CityBreaks tariff and the lodge’s current rack-rate page express different conditions for children in their own room. We will apply the policy confirmed for the specific rate and room you book, rather than combine terms from the two lists.

The lodge’s published rack-rate policy states:

Child arrangement Lodge rack-rate condition
Under 3, sharing with two adults Complimentary
Ages 4–11, sharing with two adults 50% of adult sharing rate
Ages 4–11, sharing with one adult 75% of adult sharing rate
Ages 4–11, in their own room First child pays the adult sharing rate; second child pays 75%

Rhino Watch lodge also offers a Family Tent and Family Chalets, which may be better value or more comfortable than booking separate standard units. Give us the number and ages of children so we can compare the complete family price.

Expand All

Rooms and Accommodation at Rhino Watch

Rhino Watch has a much broader room range than the words safari lodge alone suggest. Guests can choose between canvas accommodation, permanent chalets, family units and premium rooms. Always quote the named category: a “tent” and a “family chalet” have different layouts and pricing bases.

Exclusive Safari Tents

The Exclusive Tents provide a canvas safari stay within the lodge’s garden and forest setting. The lodge describes private paths and verandas for these units. They are a good first option for couples who want a tented atmosphere while retaining access to the pool, restaurant and other lodge facilities.

Ask us to confirm the bedding configuration, bathroom features and exact tent available on your dates.

Honeymoon Tent

The Honeymoon Tent appears as a separate category on the lodge’s rate card, which notes a bathtub. It suits couples who want a more distinctive room than the entry-level tent. Request current photographs and the precise room inclusions with your quote.

Chalets

Chalets offer a permanent-structure alternative to canvas. They are worth comparing with the tents if room style, bathroom layout or the view is important to you. Do not assume that all chalet categories have identical features; ask for the specific unit proposed.

Family Tent

Family Tent, with a maximum of four guests. Its rate card describes a shared bathroom for this category. Confirm the number of beds and whether its arrangement suits the ages of your children.

Family Chalets

The lodge has two Family Chalets, each with two en-suite bedrooms connected by an internal door. One bedroom is arranged as a double and the other as a twin. The listed maximum is five guests

This is the category we would check first for a family wanting parents and children under one roof while retaining separate sleeping spaces. As only two are available, request them early for weekends and holiday periods.

Other and Premium Categories

The property also has other room types  including Weaver Bird’s Nest, Paradise Flycatcher, Bird Nest, Senator Tent, Platinum Tent, Governor’s House and Euphoria Forest House. Prices and amenities vary considerably. Some premium units have features such as a plunge pool or extra private-dining options; request the exact category specification before choosing on the basis of a photograph alone.

La Bodega Restaurant and Meal Plans

La Bodega Restaurant provides the lodge’s full-board dining. The property describes a menu informed by its farm and the produce of the surrounding highland region. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included with the published full-board accommodation rates.

If you plan a long Solio, Aberdare or Ol Pejeta excursion, tell us before arrival so we can ask how lunch will be handled that day. Guests with vegetarian requirements or food allergies should give full details when booking.

Travellers searching for a Rhino Watch Safari Lodge menu should request the current menu or meal arrangements. We would not publish fixed dish names or individual food prices without a dated menu from the lodge.

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge Activities

Solio Game Reserve Safari

Solio is the excursion we would prioritise for rhino-focused guests. It is a separate private reserve, so the lodge’s accommodation rate should be considered separately from the Solio entry, vehicle and guiding costs. Rhino sightings are still subject to wildlife movement, even in a reserve known for its conservation work. The lodge describes Solio as approximately 30 minutes away, before allowing for the specific gate and your game-drive route.

A private Solio excursion allows you to spend more time with sightings that interest you. Tell us whether photography, rhinos generally or a wider game drive is the priority.

Aberdare National Park Day Trip

Aberdare provides forest, moorland and a different wildlife-viewing experience from Solio. The lodge estimates approximately 45 minutes to the park area, but the time to a particular waterfall, viewpoint or game-drive route will be longer. Park access and road conditions should guide the day’s plan.

Staying at Rhino Watch means returning to accommodation outside the park after your excursion. If you particularly want an overnight waterhole lodge inside Aberdare, compare The Ark or Treetops instead.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy Day Trip

The lodge also offers trips to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, known for rhino conservation and the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Its website estimates approximately 45 minutes to the conservancy area. The actual time to an activity within Ol Pejeta depends on the entry gate and route.

Ol Pejeta has enough to occupy a full day or an overnight stay. We can advise whether a day trip from Rhino Watch gives you enough time for the activities you want.

Birdwatching and Photo Hide

The lodge offers guided birding walks on request and a photography hide on its grounds. These experiences suit guests who want something to do without committing to a full day in a vehicle. Confirm availability, guiding and any charge before booking.

Guided Nature Walk

The lodge publishes an optional guided nature walk on its rate page. Ask about the route, duration, guest fitness requirements and the current per-person price before adding it to your stay.

Other Excursions

The property can organize a giraffe walk, a coffee-focused excursion and guided hiking options. These need to be arranged separately. We will check the location, duration, age requirements and price for the exact experience requested.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Rhino Watch Safari Lodge?

Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is in Mweiga, Nyeri County, in Kenya’s central highlands. It is outside Solio Game Reserve and Aberdare National Park.

Is Rhino Watch inside Aberdare National Park?

No. It is a lodge outside the park that can be used as a base for an Aberdare day trip.

Is Rhino Watch inside Solio Game Reserve?

No. A Solio game drive is a separate excursion from the lodge. Ask us to include the vehicle and reserve entry in your quote.

How much does Rhino Watch Safari Lodge cost?

Our published resident tariff starts at KES 8,800 per person sharing, per night on full board in a tent, valid from 1 July to 23 December 2026. The lodge publishes its own rack rates by room category; we will confirm the applicable offer and total price for your dates.

Are Rhino Watch prices per person or per room?

Standard tent and chalet rates are generally shown per person per night. The published Family Tent and Family Chalet rates are per unit per night. Check the rate basis before comparing categories.

Are meals included?

The published resident rates are on full board, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Confirm drinks and any special arrangements in your quotation.

Are Solio and Aberdare game drives included?

Do not assume so. The lodge lists guided drives and vehicles as activities or add-ons. We can prepare a package that explicitly includes the excursion, vehicle, guide and applicable entry fees.

Can I see rhinos at the lodge?

Book a Solio or Ol Pejeta excursion if rhinos are a main goal. The lodge’s name refers to the safari opportunities in the surrounding region; it should not be taken as a promise that rhinos visit your room or the lodge grounds.

Does Rhino Watch have family rooms?

Yes. Family Tent for up to four guests and two Family Chalets with separate en-suite bedrooms for up to five guests per unit. Confirm the most suitable option for your children’s ages.

Does Rhino Watch have a swimming pool?

Yes. The lodge has an infinity pool and a separate baby pool.

Does the lodge have a spa?

Yes. The Weaver Bird Spa offers treatments, a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Check the current spa menu and charges when booking.

What is the Rhino Watch restaurant called?

The lodge identifies its restaurant as La Bodega. Full-board guests receive breakfast, lunch and dinner under the published rate plan.

Where can I find the Rhino Watch menu?

Ask us for the lodge’s current menu or dining arrangements. Menus can change, and the full-board plan does not mean every dish or drink is included.

Does Rhino Watch offer birdwatching?

Yes. The lodge offers birdwatching on its grounds, a photo hide and guided birding walks on request.

Can I visit both Solio and Aberdare while staying here?

Yes. We would normally suggest separate excursion days, giving each destination enough time. Two or three nights at the lodge work better than a rushed one-night visit.

How far is Rhino Watch from Nairobi?

The lodge estimates approximately 2½ hours by road. Actual travel time depends on your starting point, traffic and stops.

What are check-in and check-out times?

The property publishes 2:00 pm check-in and 10:00 am check-out. Request any early arrival or late departure before travel.

Can Rhino Watch be combined with Lake Nakuru, Naivasha and the Masai Mara?

Yes. We can include Rhino Watch as a central Kenya stop and continue through Lake Nakuru or Naivasha to the Masai Mara. We will plan the drive and activities around the number of nights available.

Is Rhino Watch the same as Rhino Watch Safari Lodge?

Yes. Searches for “Rhino Watch Lodge” and “Rhino Watch Safari Lodge” generally refer to this Mweiga property.
